Origina

Origina’s ongoing contribution to U.S.–Ireland relations is rooted in its dual role as an Irish-headquartered organisation serving many of the world’s largest U.S.-based enterprises.

Its independent software maintenance model supports mission-critical systems relied upon by Fortune-level companies across financial services, healthcare, life sciences, and government—creating sustained commercial connectivity, trusted long-term collaboration, and technical knowledge exchange between Ireland and the United States.

Origina’s global impact is driven by its Sustainable IT Lifecycle Extension Model, a transformative, industry-challenging approach that enables organisations worldwide to dramatically reduce corporate e-waste while improving system resilience and financial sustainability. Rather than positioning sustainability as an auxiliary programme, Origina embeds circular-economy principles into its core business model, demonstrating that environmental stewardship and enterprise IT stability can reinforce, rather than compete with, one another.

The global challenge Origina addresses is immense: the world produced 61.3 million metric tons of e-waste in 2023, much of it consisting of fully functional hardware discarded due to forced vendor upgrade cycles. Origina’s model directly counters this trend by enabling companies to maintain and optimise their existing IBM, HCL, and VMware systems far beyond OEM-imposed “end of support” deadlines. This allows enterprises—including many based in the United States—to avoid premature hardware replacement, reduce raw-material extraction, and cut emissions associated with manufacturing and transport.

In 2025 Origina’s first-ever Sustainability Report formalised the organisation’s commitments, creating transparency and defining measurable environmental targets. It demonstrates how Origina delivers quantifiable reductions in customer e-waste by extending the lifespan of software and hardware previously tied to costly—and environmentally damaging—upgrade requirements.

Origina’s sustainability mission also extends beyond its own customer base. Through collaborations with Free ICT Europe, Free ICT USA, iMasons Climate Accord, This Spaceship Earth, and other advocacy groups, Origina champions:

  • “Right to repair” legislation

  • Longer ICT hardware lifecycles

  • Market transparency around forced obsolescence

  • Global circular-economy reforms

These partnerships allow Origina to influence policy conversations in both the EU and the U.S., raising international awareness about the environmental consequences of vendor lock-in.

Origina earned an EcoVadis Bronze sustainability rating—independent recognition of its environmental management practices at an early but ambitious stage. The company also partnered with Reforest Nation to plant 5,000 native trees, reflecting a regenerative mindset beyond its commercial remit.
